Santa María Volcano

We are in Guatemala! The land of the volcanoes. We have been in Xela (Quetzaltenango) for two weeks now and it was time to climb the Santa María volcano. You can see this volcano from the city. With a group of students from our language school in Xela we have climbed the Santa María volcano. At 5 o’clock we got up and went with a chicken bus (old American school bus) to the foot of the volcano. That’s where our 3-hour climb to the top began. When we arrived there was still a lot of fog and we could not yet see the top of the volcano.

After a while the fog disappeared and we had a beautiful view of the city and we finally saw the summit. In the beginning it was still fresh so we had several layers of outdoor clothing, then it finally became warmer. Fortunately, we had clothing from Merino wool. These are really good for a hike. They dry quickly and you do not smell anything;).

Santa Maria Vulkaan

The last part was heavy and exhausting because we were almost at 3800 meters altitude. But in the end we reached the top and we were rewarded with a beautiful view!! There were locals at the top who were holding a ceremony, special to see. View the drone video above!
